Important Notice to our wonderful guests; past, present and future…..
With mixed feelings, we have decided to sell the 1840 Guest House. We have truly enjoyed hosting so many wonderful people, but we feel it is time to retire.
With this decision, two possible scenarios exist. If the business does not sell by next spring, we will happily re-open and run our B&B for another season in 2024. If the business does sell, then we will need to know the intent of the buyers and what they wish to do with the property.
With such uncertainty, we believe it would be inappropriate, unfair, and misleading to accept reservations for 2024 at this time, except for the longer-term bookings described above. Therefore, you will find that our reservation system will show no availability for any dates in 2024. For 2023, we will continue to welcome guest until November 5th. For the monthly rentals thereafter, please call us at 613-269-3025.
As soon as we have clarity on what lies ahead, we will post news on this website. We regret any inconvenience or disappointment that this may cause but we are hopeful that “1840” will operate next season. We just need some time to see which path is taken.
ABOUT

The 1840 Guest House B&B was originally a one room “common” schoolhouse built in 1829. It subsequently became the “Minto” school and then the Royal Canadian Legion in 1933 before being rebuilt in 2012 to become the 1840 Guest House B&B. Our name comes from a historical inscription found on a stone wall that states “Mirricksville 1840”.
Today, the property consists of the fully renovated original schoolhouse, which is used as the main living and dining room, and a large residence for the luxury bedrooms. There is also an Annex with two additional suites, built in 2018.
Your hosts, Carolyn and John, look forward to welcoming you to this amazing historical property and the beautiful village of Merrickville.

COVID-19
We certainly live in challenging times. At the 1840 Guest House, we take your safety (and ours) very seriously and yet, we take equally seriously our commitment to help you enjoy your stay. We have demanding cleanliness standards in place, best practises from the industry to keep you protected, and we, of course, follow the guidelines and rules of the Department of Public Health. This, combined with our quality service and surroundings, should create an environment where you feel safe and ready to relax and enjoy.
We are committed to following all government guidelines and orders related to COVID-19. Although all specific COVID restrictions have been lifted at this time, we retain in place simple but important infectious disease control measures such as hand sanitizers and social distancing between tables. Our large expansive hallways and common spaces, as well as reserved dining times, help to avoid overcrowding.
Based on current provincial guidelines, masks are not required nor is proof of vaccination. We nonetheless fully understand and respect those who choose to continue to wear a mask as an added safety measure.

We open our Wine and Whisky Bar to the public on request for reservations of four or more. Call or email for reservations. We can open any day in the afternoon or evening.
Please come join us!
We are also open to the guests of the Bed and Breakfast daily.
Selecting your Wine and Whisky
We believe choosing your wine, whisky or other liquor should be an experience in and of itself. We invite you to explore the offerings in our cabinet and in our wine racks. Every whisky bottle has a price label for a 1.5oz pour and every wine bottle is also tagged with its price. We hope you find a new favourite or relax with something familiar from your past.
Our Beers
Although our focus is on wine, whisky and liquors, we understand the enjoyment of a good beer. We have six premium imported beers and one cider available at $8 per bottle. They are:

Our House Wines
Creekside Estate Winery opened in 1997 in small-town Jordan, Ontario. The Winery is run by a passionate (some say fanatical) group of industry veterans who have decades of experience in their respective fields. The team of self-described cork dorks love what they do, and have fun doing it. We are pleased to offer a wide selection of Creekside wines as our House wines; for purchase by the bottle or glass. We also have some of their top-end "Reserve" wines for purchase by the bottle.
Reds: Cabernet Merlot, Syrah
Whites: Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigiot, Unoaked Chardonnay
$8 for 5oz or $11 for 8oz

GROUP GATHERINGS. We do not allow any gathering of more than four people in any one bedroom, even if the others are registered guests. There are no exceptions. We do invite groups to gather in our schoolhouse or on our patio if they so choose. We recognize that this may cause some groups to select a different establishment since they wish to be able to gather within one or more bedrooms. Although we would regret this, the reality is that we have experienced property damage in the bedrooms, elevated noise levels, and many extra hours of cleaning when gatherings of more than four have been allowed in the past. We appreciate your understanding.
-
Children are welcome. However, we suggest that our location is better suited for children ages 12 and older. With the antiques, ornaments, fine furnishings and the quiet environment we promote, parents with younger children may not feel comfortable with the surroundings and the constant attention that would be required of younger children.
-
Maximum room occupancy is 2 persons but there is an exception for a child. One cot may be added to the Annex rooms (Rooms 4 and 5 only) and a maximum of one child per room may occupy a room with their parent or parents. The cot is only suitable for a small child. $10 surcharge per child per night unless there is only one adult. Prior notice is required if room occupancy will exceed two persons due to a child.
-
No pets, less service animals, are allowed. As owners, we have two dogs on the property but will keep them away from guests on request.
-
Room #5 (Ground Floor Annex) is wheelchair accessible, but with limitations, and is available upon request. Please call to be explained the limitations that prevent this room from being considered completely accessible. The schoolhouse, which has the main dining area, living room and associated washrooms, is also wheelchair accessible.

-
Limited bicycle storage is available free of charge.

-
Although there is no deposit for individual bookings, any cancellations within 48 hours of arrival date, or any no-shows on the arrival date, will be asked to pay one night accomadation fee.
