Important Notice to our wonderful guests; past, and future…..

Our 2024 season is underway.  We truly appreciate the countless outstanding reviews from our customers. Thank you.  Your kind words are heartwarming.  Never wanting to stand still, we will be making some important changes for 2024, based on your feedback, and, unfortunately, the realities of today's economy.

- Every bedroom will now have: a mini-fridge; a Keurig coffee maker with some complimentary coffee and tea pods; complimentary sparkling water; and a small selection of complimentary snacks.

- Check-in will now begin at 3 pm daily instead of 4 pm. We will also support early check-ins (an hour or two) whenever possible, but for a fee.  Please contact us for details and to make the arrangements.

- The schoolhouse will be available as your lounge.  For those wishing to bring their own food, drinks, or takeout, we will make available dishware, glassware, and cutlery so that you may enjoy the space while having your meal and/or refreshments.

- The pool area is "glass free".  Please plan accordingly for any beverages you wish to consume in that area.

- We will continue to accept single-night reservations - even on weekends.

- The Wine and Whisky Bar will be temporarily closed for the season.  We will not be serving beverages in the schoolhouse or by the pool but you may bring your own.

- Our "accessible room" is not available in 2024 due to a long-term commitment.

- BREAKFAST WILL NO LONGER BE PROVIDED.  This was a difficult decision but with the dramatic inflationary pressures on everything in the hospitality business, and with our desire to keep all of our rooms priced below $200/night, we needed to cut back somewhere.

-We will continue to offer complimentary access to our amenities (swimming pool, hot tub, sauna, outdoor patio), complimentary WIFI, and complimentary Fibe TV with specialty channels such as NETFLIX and CRAVE...........and the complimentary snacks and beverages already mentioned above.

- We will also continue to provide quality furnishings and linens, and we remain fully committed to best-in-class cleanliness standards.  See "More Rooms" for additional detail.

The 1840 Guest House B&B was originally a one room “common” schoolhouse built in 1829. It subsequently became the “Minto” school and then the Royal Canadian Legion in 1933 before being rebuilt in 2012 to become the 1840 Guest House B&B. Our name comes from a historical inscription found on a stone wall that states “Mirricksville 1840”.

Today, the property consists of  the fully renovated original schoolhouse, which is used as the main living and dining room, and a large residence for the luxury bedrooms.  There is also an Annex with  two additional suites, built in 2018.

Your hosts, Carolyn and John, look forward to welcoming you to this amazing historical property and the beautiful village of Merrickville.

All of our rooms are air conditioned, with private ensuites, queen-size pillow top beds, quality linens, plush bathrobes and Bell Fibe TVs.

We certainly live in challenging times.  At the 1840 Guest House, we take your safety (and ours) very seriously and yet, we take equally seriously our commitment to help you enjoy your stay.  We have demanding cleanliness standards in place, best practises from the industry to keep you protected, and we, of course, follow the guidelines and rules of the Department of Public Health.  This, combined with our quality service and surroundings, should create an environment where you feel safe and ready to relax and enjoy.

We are  committed to following all government guidelines and orders related to COVID-19.  Although all specific COVID restrictions have been lifted at this time,  we retain in place simple but important infectious disease control measures such as hand sanitizers and social distancing between tables.   Our large expansive hallways and common spaces help to avoid overcrowding.

Based on current provincial guidelines, masks are not required nor is proof of vaccination.  We nonetheless fully understand and respect those who choose to continue to wear a mask as an added safety measure.

  • Check out time is 11am.

  • Check in time is 3-6 pm unless other arrangements are made.  Early check-in (an hour or two) may be possible for a fee.  Contact us for details and to make arrangements.

  • Payment is by cash (Canadian dollar only), credit or debit.  No personal cheques please.

  • GROUP BOOKINGS.  Groups are welcome.  For group bookings, a $500 deposit may be required.  The deposit is fully refundable to 30 days prior to the arrival date.  The deposit is non-refundable if the reservation is cancelled, reduced in numbers, or shortened with less than 30 days notice prior to arrival date.

  • GROUP GATHERINGS.  We encourage the use of the historical schoolhouse, or our patio, for any gatherings.  We do not allow any gathering of more than four people in any one bedroom, even if the others are registered guests.  There are no exceptions.   We recognize that this may cause some groups to select a different establishment since they wish to be able to gather within one or more bedrooms.  Although we would regret this, the reality is that we have experienced property damage in the bedrooms, elevated noise levels, and many extra hours of cleaning when gatherings of more than four have been allowed in the past. We appreciate your understanding.

  • Children are welcome.  However, we suggest that our location is better suited for children ages 12 and older. With the antiques, ornaments, fine furnishings and the quiet environment we promote, parents with younger children may not feel comfortable with the surroundings and the constant attention that would be required of younger children.

  • Maximum room occupancy is 2 persons but there is an exception for a child.  One cot may be added to the Annex rooms (Rooms 5 and 6 only) and a maximum of one child per room may occupy a room with their parent or parents.  The cot is only suitable for a small child.  $10 surcharge per child per night unless there is only one adult.  Prior notice is required if room occupancy will exceed two persons due to a child.

  • No pets, less service animals, are allowed.  Paperwork is required on check-in demonstrating that the pet is indeed a service animal.  Vest is required to be worn by service animal when in common areas.  Advance notice must be provided if a service animal will accompany a guest and the only bedrooms that can house service animals are suites 5 and 6.  This is to ensure that our other rooms remain allergen free.  As owners, we have two dogs on the property but will keep them away from guests on request.

  • Ground Floor Annex room is wheelchair accessible, but with limitations. Please call to be explained the limitations that prevent this room from being considered completely accessible.  THIS ROOM IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR THE 2024 SEASON DUE TO A LONG-TERM COMMITMENT.  The schoolhouse, which has the main dining area, living room and associated washrooms, is also wheelchair accessible.

  • Parking is available for one car per room.  Additional parking available on public streets. and is free of charge.

  • Limited bicycle storage is available free of charge.

  • Bicycle rental is available at $5 per hour or $25 per day.  Quantities limited.

  • NO SMOKING and NO VAPING in buildings, on balconies and at outdoor common areas.  Please use designated smoking area only.  Anyone smoking or vaping anywhere except the designated smoking area will have their reservation immediately terminated (without refund) and will also be charged a $250 cleaning fee if smoking indoors.

  • Damages, if deemed negligent, careless, or intentional, shall be charged to the room occupants.

  • The property adopts "quiet mode" at 10pm daily.  All lights will be dimmed or turned off as appropriate and we ask patrons to minimize noise as of that time.

  • There is no deposit required for any individual room bookings.

  • Although there is no deposit for individual bookings, any cancellations within 7 days of arrival date, or any no-shows on the arrival date, will be required to pay one night accommadation fee.
